LEXUS V8 IGNITERS PURPOSE
The igniters physically fires the ignition coils in response to the ECU’s signal. Engine control units or also known as engine control modules generally produce very low amperage signals as outputs. These signals are much lower than necessary to fire the coils and this is why an igniter is required to lift the amperage for the coils.

CONSTRUCTION OF A LEXUS V8 IGNITER
The igniters are to provide a Tachometer output and consists of a power transistor.

OPERATION OF THE LEXUS V8 IGNITER
The igniters are basically electronic relays. They receive a signal trigger from the engine control module and responds by sending a higher amperage output to the ignition coils. Each time a spark is produced it is confirmed by a signal IGF and sent back to the engine control unit as a confirmation of spark. If this signal is not read by the engine control module the system will shut down as it would mean there is something wrong. This is a safety feature built into the Toyota and Lexus systems.
